Brady & the York County Champion Northeastern Bobcats

For the first time in 19 years there was a playoff series to determine the champions in the York-Adams County League for high school baseball. Jan's grandson, Brady has played for the Northeastern Bobcats his whole high school career. In fact, the entire team, comprised mostly of seniors, has played together for years. This year their goal was the Gold Medal, and they succeeded. (Photo on left is York Dispatch photo)

This was a neat week in high school baseball. The first game, played Monday was at the home of the York Revolution, Sovereign Bank Stadium in York. What a neat ballpark. It is very cozy and fan friendly with no bad seats in the house.

Northeastern played Central in the semi finals. Why the Division 1 and 2 winners played each other in the semi's is a mystery to me, but who am I to argue with success? Delone Catholic & Bermudian Springs played in the nightcap. These teams were the Division 3 and 4 winners.

Dan Dierdorff, Northeastern's starting pitcher threw a great game, backed by a solid defense and some pretty incredible speed on his pitches. In that game Northeastern scored 4 runs in the 5th inning to pad a 1 - 0 lead. Brady stroked a shot to right field with the bases loaded to score two runs and the rest of the offense drove in 2 additional runs to make it 5 - 0 in the fifth. Northeastern went on to complete the win over Central, the Division 1 champion, 5 - 0. Jan calls this photo of Brady "The Hit".

Wednesday night, Northeastern played Delone Catholic, winner of Monday's nightcap over Bermudian Springs, at Horn Field in Red Lion. Brady was the starting pitcher, and threw a complete game one hitter, again backed by a solid defense which included two pretty amazing plays to keep Delone at bay.

Northeastern took a 1 - 0 lead early, only to have Delone come back and tie the score at 1 all. Then Brady buckled down and threw his game, confident in his defense and the teams ability to get base hits and score runs. By the fourth inning, I realized he had a one hitter going, but did not dare say anything to anyone for fear of jinxing him. Then came the 5th, 6th and final innings and the Bobcat defense backed his pitching up with solid plays. He also helped himself with an RBI single.

Brady said after the game that when the announcer said he had thrown a one hit ball game he was amazed. All in all, it was a pretty good night, especially when the team achieved their season long goal and received the Gold Medals awarded to the championship team in the league. They even got the head coach with a Gatorade shower after the game. These guys played well all season long and kept their confidence, focus and composure into and through this weeks play off games. Next stop is the district playoffs, where they will play the winner of the Manheim-Central v Juniata play in game at a location to be determined. I'll let everyone know the results.
